DR. BRIAN NAHED'S WORK→

Brian V. Nahed, MD MSC specializes in the surgical treatment of brain tumors. Dr. Nahed focuses on glioblastoma, gliomas (low grade and high grade), metastatic brain tumors, and meningiomas. Dr Nahed is a leader in brain tumors of the language and motor cortex requiring awake surgery, language and motor mapping, and subcortical stimulation. Dr Nahed specializes in using intra-operative imaging (iMRI, iCT, and ultrasound) and minimally invasive procedures to treat brain tumors aggressively, safely and maximize extent of resection. Dr. Brian Nahed research focuses on developing a blood test for brain tumor patients at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. Dr. Nahed serves as the Associate Director of the MGH Neurosurgery Residency Program. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the CNS/AANS Executive Committee on Brain Tumors. Dr. Nahed also serves as a neurotrauma consultant for the National Football League (NFL).

Education & Training

Born in New York, Dr. Brian Nahed graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California at Los Angeles where he was awarded the prestigious Neuroscience Departmental Highest Honors and named the UCLA Bruin of the Year. He attended the Yale School of Medicine where he was awarded the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship Award to study the genetics of intracranial aneurysms. 

Dr. Brian Nahed completed his Internship and Neurosurgery residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital. During his time at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Dr. Brian Nahed completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Drs. Daniel Haber and Shyamala Maheswaran, studying circulating tumor cells in brain tumor patients to develop a new device to capture and identify circulating tumor cells in the blood of patients with brain tumors.

Dr. Brian Nahed completed his chief residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Neurosurgery, and served as the director of the North Neurosurgical Service. Dr. Nahed also completed a complex spine fellowship with Dr. Eric Woodard and obtained a Masters in Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health.  He was recruited to The Massachusetts General Hospital to specialize in brain tumors, particularly gliomas, metastatic tumors, and meningiomas, and to expand his research to develop the first clinical blood based tests for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with brain tumors. 


Career

Dr. Brian Nahed is an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital Brain Tumor Center and the Stephen E. and Catherine Pappas Center for Neuro-Oncology.  He is a teaching faculty member of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Nahed is the Associate Program Director for the Neurosurgery Residency Program. Dr. Nahed serves on the Executive Committee for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) and the Executive Committee for the Section on Tumors for the AANS/CNS. He serves as Co-Chair of the CNS Leadership Institute and on several national committees. He recently served as the scientific programming chair and currently serves as the annual meeting chair for the CNS Annual Meeting. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and several clinical brain tumor guidelines for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. In addition, Dr. Brian Nahed serves on the editorial board and is a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. Dr.  Brian Nahed serves as a neurotrauma consultant for the National Football League.
